Amit Shah has returned to Delhi amid escalating security concerns in Manipur, where tensions remain high following a series of violent incidents, including the killing of six civilians—three of them women and children—in Jiribam district.
Protests, which have escalated since Saturday, saw angry mobs setting fire to the homes of several BJP and Congress legislators, including a senior state minister, as security forces struggled to restore order in the region, as reported by the Hindustan Times.
Violent protests erupted on Saturday night, despite an indefinite curfew being imposed, after militants killed three women and children in Jiribam district. Earlier in the day, enraged protesters had attacked the homes of three state ministers and six MLAs.
Aginated protesters set fire to the homes of several lawmakers, including PWD Minister Govindas Konthoujam in Ningthoukhong, BJP MLA Y. Radheshyam of Hiyanglam at Langmeidong Bazar, BJP MLA Paonam Brojen of Wangjing Tentha in Thoubal district, and Congress MLA Th. Lokeshwar of Khundrakpam in Imphal East district, according to officials.
The legislators and their families were not at home when the angry mobs stormed their residences, vandalized property, and set the houses on fire, police said and The Hindustan Times reported.
They added that the homes were partially damaged in the incidents.
In a separate incident, protesters attempted to storm the ancestral home of Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh in Luwangshangbam, Imphal East. However, security forces, including Assam Rifles and Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, deployed tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd, preventing them from advancing within 100-200 meters of the CM’s residence. Despite this, protesters continued to block roads leading to Singh’s home, setting fire to tires and placing iron rods across streets to obstruct movement.
