US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he plans to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday as part of efforts to resolve the ongoing war in Ukraine. Trump shared details of the call while en route from Florida to Washington aboard Air Force One.
“We will see if we have something to announce maybe by Tuesday. I will be speaking to President Putin on Tuesday,” Trump said.
“A lot of work’s been done over the weekend. We want to see if we can bring that war to an end.”
Although Russia’s initial goal of overthrowing Ukraine has failed, it still holds substantial parts of Ukrainian territory.
Trump suggested that the discussions will focus on issues like land and power plants as part of efforts to resolve the conflict.
“We will be talking about land. We will be talking about power plants,” he remarked, adding that the conversation will involve “dividing up certain assets.”
This comes just days after the US President described Putin’s recent remarks on the ceasefire as “very promising but not complete.”
“Well, we’d like to see a cease fire from Russia. And we have, you know, not been working in the dark. We’ve been discussing … Ukraine land and pieces of land that would be kept and lost, and all of the other elements of a final agreement. There’s a power plant involved. You know, very big power plant involved. Who’s going to get the power plant and who’s going to get this and that? And so, you know, it’s, it’s not an easy process. But phase 1 is the ceasefire. We’ve been discussing concepts of land because you don’t want to waste time with the ceasefire, if, it’s not going to mean anything. So we’re saying: look, this is what you can get, this is what you can’t get. They discuss Nato, and being in Nato, and everybody knows what the answer to that is, it. Know that answer for 40 years, in all fairness. So a lot of the details of a final agreement have actually been discussed. Now we’re going to see whether or not Russia is there, and if they’re not, it’ll be a very disappointing moment for the world,” Trump said.
Trump has consistently claimed he could end the Russia-Ukraine war within 24 hours. However, he recently admitted that he was “being a little bit sarcastic” when he repeatedly made that promise during his campaign, even before taking office.
Trump was questioned about his campaign vow during an interview on the “Full Measure” television program, as his administration continues efforts to broker a solution, 54 days into his second term.
