In his New Year address, Chinese President Xi Jinping declared that China’s “reunification” with Taiwan is unstoppable, warning that Beijing will press on with its “united front” strategy.
Reuters reports that over the past year, Beijing has ramped up military pressure on Taiwan, with frequent incursions by warships and aircraft into the island’s surrounding waters and airspace. Taiwanese officials see this as a deliberate effort to “normalize” China’s military presence near the island.
The report also highlighted that China views Taiwan, a democratically governed island, as part of its territory, a claim firmly rejected by Taiwan’s government. Taiwan asserts that only its people have the right to decide their future and that Beijing must respect their decision.
Earlier, Chinese Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, shared on X that Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered his 2025 New Year message via China Media Group and the Internet. In his address, Xi emphasized, “We Chinese on both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to one and the same family. No one can sever the bond of kinship between us, and no one can stop China’s reunification, a trend of the times.”
Xi also emphasized China’s commitment to global cooperation, stating, “As unprecedented changes accelerate worldwide, it is crucial to rise above division and conflict with a broad vision, and to care for the future of humanity with great passion. China will collaborate with all nations to promote friendship, enhance cultural exchange, and build a community with a shared future for mankind. Together, we must create a better future for the world.”
On December 28, Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) announced it would investigate claims made in a YouTube video about China’s attempts to politically influence young Taiwanese and encourage them to apply for Chinese ID cards, according to the Taipei Times. The video, released by Taiwanese rapper Chen Po-yuan and YouTuber “Pa Chiung,” outlined China’s “united front” tactics. This marked the second video on the topic released by the duo in December. In the video, Chen visited the Taiwan Youth Entrepreneurship Park in Quanzhou, Fujian, and the Strait Herald news platform in Xiamen, where Lin Jingdong, Assistant Director of Strait Herald and a member of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), discussed strategies to sway young Taiwanese through Taiwan-related organizations and collaborations with small influencers.
