Violence erupted in Haldwani town in Uttarakhand yesterday as authorities demolished a mosque and an adjoining Madrasa, resulting in at least five deaths and around 60 injuries from police firing. The incident, which occurred during what authorities termed an “anti-encroachment drive,” has sparked widespread outrage and raised concerns about religious freedoms and communal tensions.
At around 3:30, the mosque, known as ‘Malik ke Bagiche’ ka Madarsa, was demolished by municipal authorities seemingly as part of efforts to clear illegal constructions, including the mosque and the Madrasa. However, Muslim residents, who prayed at the mosque, claim they were unfairly targeted.
The aftermath of the demolition saw clashes between protesters and police, resulting in injuries on both sides. Videos circulating online on social media depicted scenes of chaos, with protesters setting fire to vehicles. The police responded with tear gas and firing.
The Dispute
Authorities defended their actions, claiming that the facilities were unlawfully constructed on government property and were not recognized as religious institutions. However, residents deny this claim, stating that the destruction took place before the court could reach a final decision.
Amid citizens’ protests and attempts to put off the demolition before the final court verdict, officials moved quickly, worsening the situation.
The demolished mosque and Madrasa were located in the railway colony area where almost 4000 people live. The government aims to purchase the property for railway development, an issue that is presently being reviewed by the Supreme Court.
“Shoot at Sight” Order
In response to the unrest, authorities have imposed a curfew and issued “shoot at sight” orders. Internet services have been suspended, and schools in the affected area have been closed as a precautionary measure. Thousands of police personnel have been deployed to maintain order.
The demolition in Haldwani took place shortly after Uttarakhand passed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), a law aimed at establishing a common legal framework for all residents, irrespective of religion or community laws.
