According to a report by Reuters, Chinese President Xi Jinping is likely to skip the upcoming G20 summit in New Delhi. Two Indian officials, one diplomat based in China, and one other official told Reuters that Premier Li Qiang is expected to represent Beijing at the September 9-10 meeting in New Delhi.
This news comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that he will not be traveling to New Delhi for the summit and will send Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov instead.
The latest developments come just days after China released its “standard map” claiming the entire state of Arunachal Pradesh and Gosthana (Aksai Chin) as its own territory.
The G20 summit is set to take place on September 9-10 in New Delhi.
Earlier China along with Turkiye had declined to attend G20 tourism meeting held in May in Srinagar.
The absence of both Putin and Xi Jinping from the upcoming G20 summit being held in Delhi, may have significant implications for the discussions and negotiations that take place during the meeting. It is historic first ever presidency of G 20 for the India.
The G20 is an international forum for the governments and central bank governors from 19 countries and the European Union, and its members represent around 85% of the global economy.
The summit provides a platform for leaders to discuss and coordinate on issues related to global economic growth, international trade, and financial market regulation.
It, however, remains to be seen how the top officials from India respond to his Xi Jinping’s announcement and how his absence will affect the discussions and outcomes of the G20 summit in New Delhi.
