‘August’ – Dates Set for No Confidence Motion Debate in Parliament

Date:

New Delhi, 1 August, 2023: On August 8, 9, and 10, the Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla is set to address a motion of no confidence. Last Thursday, Congressman Gaurav Gogoi spoke on behalf of I.N.D.I.A’s opposing parties. A coalition presented a resolution of no confidence against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla acknowledged the proposal and declared he would schedule it for debate after determining its level of support.

The speaker said, “I will discuss this with the leaders of all parties and inform you of an appropriate time to take this up for discussion.”

This no-confidence vote poses almost no threat to the Narendra Modi administration, which has the support of at least 332 Lok Sabha members. The opposition, meanwhile, said that they were fully aware that they might not pass the number test and that the goal of the motion was to put pressure on the prime minister to address the violence in Manipur.

The opposition parties have been calling for a thorough debate in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha as well as a statement from the prime minister in Parliament, despite the government’s proposal that Union home minister Amit Shah address the subject in the parliament.

Mallikarjun Kharge approached President Murmu over Manipur issue

On behalf of the opposition parties, Congress chairman Mallikarjun Kharge requested time from President Droupadi Murmu to discuss the Manipur issue, sources said on Tuesday. They further stated that the President has not given him any time yet.

A group of 21 opposition MPs visited the state that has seen ethnic conflict and informed the INDIA alliance’s leaders about the situation there. The group traveled to the devastated areas and spoke with residents in both the valley and the hills’ relief camps.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, a leader of the Congress party in the Lok Sabha, visited Manipur as a member of the opposition delegation and called the situation there “grave.”

The opposition parties have been advocating for a comprehensive debate in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, seeking a statement from the Prime Minister directly in Parliament.
