The Chhattisgarh State Waqf Board has directed all mosques, dargahs, and madrasas in the state to hoist the national flag on August 15, marking the 78th anniversary of India’s Independence.
In a letter issued on Monday, Waqf Board Chairman Dr. Salim Raj stated that the tricolour stands as a symbol of national pride and unity beyond religious boundaries. “Respect for the flag is above every religion,” he said, emphasizing the need to promote patriotism and communal harmony.
The directive instructs mutawallis custodians of Waqf properties to ensure that the national flag is raised at the main entrances of religious institutions, in the presence of imams or members of mosque committees.
“This year, as we celebrate our 78th Independence Day, every mosque, madrasa, and dargah in Chhattisgarh should hoist the tricolour at its main gate,” the letter reads. “Understand the significance of Independence Day and uphold its dignity by fostering unity, patriotism, and brotherhood.”
Dr. Raj acknowledged that while some Islamic institutions have traditionally refrained from flag-hoisting ceremonies, he insisted there should be no opposition to displaying the national emblem. “Those who do not respect the tricolour or the nation have no right to live on this land,” he said, adding that refusal to comply would reflect “fundamentalist thinking.”
