A 49 year old Chinese national has been nabbed by Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) on Monday at the Rupaidiha checkpoint at India-Nepal border in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district following his illegal entry in India. He was reportedly found videographing sensitive border areas, as told by the officials.
What Exactly Happened?
A Chinese national, identified as Liu Qunjing from Hunan province, has been detained after allegedly crossing into India from Nepal without valid documents. Security personnel seized multiple foreign currencies from him, including Pakistani, Chinese and Nepalese notes.
According to Ganga Singh Udavat, commandant of the SSB’s 42nd battalion, the patrol team that intercepted Qunjing reported that he was recording videos near a restricted stretch along the Indo-Nepal border shortly after entering Indian territory.
During a search, officials found three mobile phones—one of which contained footage of sensitive locations within India. Investigators also recovered a map of Nepal printed entirely in English. Officers said Qunjing communicated mostly through gestures and appeared unfamiliar with both Hindi and English.
With the help of an interpreter, security agencies questioned him and learned that he had previously travelled to Pakistan on a valid visa. His undocumented entry into India, his videography near critical sites, and his travel history have raised suspicions among authorities.
Qunjing has been handed over to the local police, who have booked him under the Foreigners Act at the Rupaidiha police station. Preliminary inquiries indicate that he arrived in Nepal from China on November 15 on a tourist visa, reached Nepalgunj on November 22, and crossed into India illegally on November 24.
