The Supreme Court granted bail to AAP leader Sanjay Singh in the Delhi excise policy case on Tuesday, as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) chose not to oppose the bail plea. The ED stated it had no objection to granting bail to Sanjay Singh in the case.
Six months later, on Tuesday (April 2), the Supreme Court directed the release on bail of Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh. Sanjay Singh had been arrested on October 4, 2023, in connection with a money laundering case related to the Delhi liquor policy.
The Apex Court bench, comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna, Dipankar Datta, and PB Varale, declared that his custody was no longer necessary. The CBI and the ED alleged irregularities in modifying the Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22 and extending undue favors to license holders.
The bench permitted Singh to continue his participation in political activities, especially since the 2024 Lok Sabha elections are just weeks away.
Addressing Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, who appeared for the ED, the bench noted that no money had been recovered from Sanjay Singh. The allegation of him receiving a bribe of Rs 2 crore could be tested during the trial.
The probe agency had opposed the bail plea in the high court, claiming that Singh was involved in acquiring, possessing, concealing, dissipating, and using proceeds of the crime generated from the alleged Delhi liquor scam during the policy period of 2021–22.
Previously, a trial court had rejected Singh’s bail plea on December 22, and on February 9, the Delhi HC rejected his bail application before he moved to the top court.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Bharat Rashtra Samithi leader K. Kavitha were recently arrested in the case. Sisodia and AAP communications in-charge Vijay Nair are among the other leaders who have been arrested by the ED and are currently under judicial custody in Tihar jail.
