Heavy water showers for the past two days has led to severe waterlogging in Gujarat’s Vadodara causing a flood like situation. As per the weather department, Vadodara received 26 cm of rainfall on Monday. The heavy and constant rain showers has led to flood like situation.
Waterlogging in residential areas
Due to heavy rainfall the residential areas are experiencing intense water logging due to the Vishwamitri River overflowing. As per the reports of the news agency ANI, people were seen submerged till knee deep water.A resident told ANI, “Water has entered houses since Monday evening in low-lying areas. People are shifting to other safe locations. There is a shortage of food. People are facing a lot of difficulty.”
In Vadodara, flooding forced the relocation of a thousand residents. The air force played a crucial role in assisting those displaced by the rising waters.
Reason
The heavy rain showers faced by Gujarat is due to deep depression moving from east Rajasthan towards the Saurashtra region. The Indian state Gujarat has been on red alert with hundreds of people being displaced.
Gujarat CM Steps In
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel held a review meeting at the State Emergency Operation Center (SEOC) in Gandhinagar on Tuesday to assess the ongoing relief and rescue operations statewide, according to an official press release.
The meeting highlighted that in the last 24 hours, 251 talukas across 33 districts received rainfall, with Tankara taluka in Morbi district recording the highest at 347 mm.
More than 15 rivers and 21 lakes across Gujarat have overflowed due to heavy rainfall, prompting Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel to issue strict orders prohibiting anyone from approaching these swollen water bodies.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi contacted Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel to discuss the state’s heavy rainfall and the ongoing relief and rescue efforts. Patel shared on X that the Prime Minister offered guidance on safeguarding lives and livestock and assured that the Central Government would provide all necessary support. Modi is reportedly closely monitoring the situation, expressing concern for Gujarat.
According to reports from a review meeting, 206 reservoirs in the state have reached 72.33% of their total storage capacity. Of these, 76 are completely filled, 96 have been placed on high alert, and 19 are under alert.The meeting also revealed that 23,871 people have been relocated to safer areas, while 1,696 individuals have been rescued. The chief minister urged the public to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.
