Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Monday that the Ministry of Home Affairs will establish five new districts in the union territory of Ladakh.
In a post on X, Amit Shah stated that the creation of new districts will enhance governance across Ladakh, ensuring that benefits reach residents in every corner of the union territory.
He credited the decision to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of creating a developed and prosperous Ladakh. The new districts will include Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang.
“In pursuit of Narendra Modi’s vision to build a developed and prosperous Ladakh the MHA has decided to create five new districts in the union territory. The new districts, namely Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra and Changthang, will take the benefits meant for the people to their doorsteps by bolstering governance in every nook and cranny. The Modi government is committed to creating abundant opportunities for the people of Ladakh,” Shah wrote on X.
Ladakh currently consists of two districts—Leh and Kargil—each governed by its own autonomous district council. With the addition of the new districts, Ladakh will expand to a total of seven districts.
Previously part of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh became a separate union territory in 2019 when the BJP-led central government revoked the state’s special status and divided it into two union territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
Ladakh, renowned globally as a top tourist destination and popular motorcycling hotspot, attracts thousands of riders to its high-altitude roads. The region holds strategic significance, particularly in the context of recent Chinese aggression in its eastern areas.
