India & China ‘primary funders’ of Russian war: Donald Trump at UNGA

Date:

China and India are the “Primary funders” of the ongoing Russia and Ukraine war by “continuing to purchase Russian oil” US President Donald Trump said speaking at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.

“China and India are the primary funders of the ongoing war by continuing to purchase Russian oil,” Trump said.

Donald Trump said he was willing to implement “very strong tariffs” to stop the purchase of Russian oil but stressed that the move would require cooperation from European nations. He criticized several NATO member states for continuing to import Russian energy, including natural gas, despite the war in Ukraine.

Donald Trump launched this criticism at India and China, even as he took aim at NATO allies for, in his words, “funding Russia’s war” in Ukraine. Trump reiterated his long-standing claim that the war in Ukraine would never have begun had he been in office at the time.

“The easiest” crisis to be solved: Trump

Trump said he had expected the Ukraine crisis to be “the easiest” to solve, citing his “good relationship” with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “They’ve been fighting for three and a half years. It should have taken a matter of days, certainly less than a week,” he said.

He went on to accuse China and India of financing the war by continuing to buy Russian oil, labeling them as the “primary funders” of the conflict. Trump also singled out NATO allies for failing to cut off Russian energy imports, suggesting their purchases undermined efforts to isolate Moscow.

“The only question now is how many more lives will be lost,” Trump said, warning that the United States was prepared to implement a new wave of sweeping tariffs intended to end the war swiftly. “A very strong round of powerful tariffs would stop the bloodshed very quickly,” he said.

Reiterating a controversial claim from his previous presidency, Trump said he had successfully brokered peace in seven international conflicts, including between India and Pakistan,  a claim that has been publicly refuted by New Delhi. He said, “In just seven months, I ended seven wars that were considered unendable,  some lasting over 30 years.”
