The national convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday urged Delhi residents to choose between the “Kejriwal model” and the “BJP model.” He claimed that under the BJP model, public funds are diverted into the pockets of the party’s wealthy allies.
Arvind Kejriwal claimed on Sunday that the BJP-led central government had waived debts amounting to ₹10 lakh crore for around 400-500 individuals over the past five years.
“The people of Delhi have two models: the first is the Kejriwal model – where the public’s money is spent on the public… and the second is the BJP model – where the public’s money goes into the pockets of their rich friends. Now the public has to decide which model to choose,” Kejriwal said
Arvind Kejriwal highlighted that under the AAP-led government, Delhi residents are receiving benefits of up to ₹25,000 per month. He further asserted that if the BJP comes to power, it would halt all such welfare schemes, as they are “against their model.”
This development comes ahead of the high-stakes Delhi assembly election, where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress are working to prevent the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP from securing a third consecutive term in power.
Voting for the Delhi assembly election will be held in a single phase on February 5, with the vote counting scheduled for February 8.
Delhi has a total of 70 assembly seats, with the majority mark set at 36, which is the number of seats a party or alliance needs to secure in order to form the government.
AAP, BJP, and Congress, the leading contenders in the Delhi assembly election, have clashed on multiple issues during the campaigning phase. The latest point of contention has been the polluted state of the Yamuna river.
BJP candidate from New Delhi, Parvesh Verma, on Saturday immersed an effigy of Arvind Kejriwal in the Yamuna river, criticizing the Delhi Chief Minister for failing to fulfill his promise of cleaning the river so that people could take a dip in it.
AAP spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar retaliated against Parvesh Verma, accusing him of “stooping to such antics” in a bid to gain publicity.
Later, Home Minister Amit Shah accused Arvind Kejriwal of misusing public funds intended for building new hospitals and schools, as well as cleaning the Yamuna river, alleging that the money was wasted in “scams.”
The BJP leader claimed that Arvind Kejriwal, who had entered politics vowing not to accept a government bungalow, ended up building a ₹52 crore “sheesh mahal” for himself.
Amit Shah, as quoted by news agency PTI, said, “Arvind Kejriwal promised a corruption-free Delhi but was involved in the liquor scam worth crores of rupees.”
Shah further alleged that Kejriwal had promised to shut down liquor shops in residential areas but instead allowed them to operate near schools and religious places.
Shah added, “But PM Modi acted sternly and put him and his ministers behind bars.” He further claimed that Kejriwal had also promised to clean the Yamuna and take a dip in it, but failed to deliver on both fronts.
Shah remarked, “Today, BJP workers took Kejriwal’s effigy for a dip in the Yamuna, and even that fell sick.”
