KGMU ‘Religious Conversion’ Case: Probe May Be Handed Over to UP Police STF, University Extends OPD Shutdown Deadline to 48 Hours

Date:

Following the outrage and allegations of a bigger religious conversion network, Lucknow’s King George’s Medical University (KGMU) announced Monday to hand over the case to the Special Task Force (STF) of Uttar Pradesh Police.

“The allegations had surfaced suggesting the involvement of a larger religious conversion network, the investigation of which lay outside the university’s jurisdiction. The university administration decided on Monday to transfer the entire probe to the STF,” said Professor K. K. Singh while speaking to FoEJ Media. Singh is also the spokesperson of KGMU.

“The official added that allegations had also emerged implicating some faculty members in a larger conversion racket, prompting the decision to have the matter investigated by authorities at a higher level,” he added.

As reported by the Indian Express, the development followed Vice-Chancellor Soniya Nityanand’s meeting with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday evening, after a tense day on campus marked by prolonged deliberations among faculty members and resident doctors.

“… We sought time from CM Yogi Adityanath, and he was briefed about the Vishakha Committee report. He was also made aware of the incident that took place here on the 9th. We clarified that, as per the Vishakha Committee report, the accused student has been found guilty, and the KGMU administration has decided that he cannot continue his course here…” Vice-Chancellor Soniya Nityanand told ANI.

The sequence of the “bigger conversion” case emerges from the last month, where a KGMU resident doctor, who allegedly attempted to commit suicide, had accused Dr. Rameezuddin, a junior resident doctor at KGMU, of physical assault and religious conversion.  She alleged that Dr. Ramizuddin entered into a relationship with her on the promise of marriage, established physical relations, and later pressured her to undergo an abortion. She further claimed that he made her conversion to Islam a condition for marriage. Rameezuddin was arrested last week.

“Our investigating team got information today (January 10) that Dr. Rameezuddin (alias Rameez Malik) had come to his rented house in Lucknow to take his belongings and was planning to surrender before court. He was arrested from there and has been sent to judicial custody,” DCP (West) Vishwajeet Srivastava said, as reported by the Indian Express.

“On December 23, 2025, a medical student at KGMU filed a complaint alleging that Rameezuddin had physically abused her and pressured her to convert to another religion when she raised the issue of marriage. During the investigation, a second medical student lodged a similar complaint, accusing him of abuse, a forced abortion, and coercion to convert for marriage,” she added.

“…The Vishaka Committee, after examining all available evidence and statements from the parties concerned and following due procedure, found Dr Rameez guilty. In what has been described as the strictest recommendation in the university’s history, the committee decided to forward a proposal to the Directorate of Medical Education seeking the cancellation of his admission,” the University said.

A few days later, on January 9, a group of people allegedly involved with the BJP tried to barge into the KGMU V-C’s office to meet the VC, leading to vandalism. The group allegedly raised slogans of ‘Vande Mataram’ and ‘Jai Shri Ram.’ The administration alleged that the crowd got into a scuffle with staff.

Ahead of which, all KGMU employees said they would consider suspending OPD services from Tuesday if the police did not register an FIR within 24 hours.

“KGMU is known for training doctors and providing care to critically ill patients. If the safety of the vice-chancellor and senior officials cannot be ensured, it raises concerns about the security of faculty members, resident doctors, nurses, and other staff. Given the seriousness of the situation, there was discussion about closing the OPD from today; however, keeping patients—many of whom travel long distances—in mind, it was decided to issue a 24-hour notice instead,” the minutes of the meeting, which was initially accessed by Indian Express and then by FoEJ Media, read.
