The Left Unity alliance, comprising the All India Students’ Association (AISA), Students’ Federation of India (SFI), and Democratic Students’ Federation (DSF) has won all four central panel positions in the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) elections for 2025–26.
Aditi from AISA was elected as President, while Gopika from SFI secured the post of Vice President. Sunil of DSF won as General Secretary, and Danish of AISA was elected as Joint Secretary.
According to data released after the counting, the election recorded a voter turnout of approximately 67.17%, with 5,818 out of 8,657 registered students casting their votes. Comrade Aditi received 1,970 votes, Comrade Gopika secured around 3,100 votes, Comrade Sunil garnered 2,005 votes, and Comrade Danish obtained approximately 2,100 votes.
The polls were conducted for the second time this year. The Left Unity, in its statement, alleged that the election period witnessed incidents of violence involving the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), accusing the right-wing student organization of attempting to disrupt the democratic process. The group also claimed that several outgoing JNUSU office-bearers were subjected to physical assaults and verbal abuse.
Reacting to his victory, newly elected General Secretary Sunil said while talking to FoEJ Media, “We will always remain among the students. Only those who stay connected with students will win on this campus. This is a victory of truth and of our progressive politics.”
The Left organizations further alleged that Delhi Police “acted under political pressure” and used force against students protesting the violence. Despite the tensions, the alliance said the students “rose to the occasion to identify, isolate, and defeat ABVP.”
In their statement, the Left Unity described the election as a “challenge to the powers that be,” highlighting key campus issues such as hostel evictions, withdrawal of means-cum-merit scholarships, installation of surveillance systems in the library, privatization of education, and fund cuts.
Simultaneously, elections to the Internal Committee against Sexual Harassment (IC) were also held, where Left candidates reportedly emerged victorious. Comrade Garvita, Comrade Shruti, and Comrade Paran were elected as IC student representatives from the undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD constituencies, respectively.
The statement also expressed solidarity with global struggles, including those in Palestine, Congo, and Sudan, and reaffirmed JNU’s tradition of “debate and resistance” against oppression.
The newly elected JNUSU leaders have pledged to “uphold JNU’s democratic and inclusive ethos” and address student concerns ranging from campus facilities to academic funding.
