Mental Health: Breaking the Silence in India

Date:

It is difficult to talk about mental illness in India as many people judge it vigorously. In the past, people thought that mental health issues were caused by spirits and black magic. These old ideas are slowly fading, but still affect the number of people who are experiencing mental illness. People don’t have good information and don’t believe in false things, so they feel terribly confused. Most people believe that mental illness means that you are weak or can catch them. In other words, people avoid those who suffer. Families often have the feeling that they have to show “the perfect” paintings, so they believe that mental illness will shame them. Because of this, people who suffer are often calm and are afraid of others’ thoughts or saying. This makes treatment more difficult and gives rise to that quality of life, as you interact with others and their work. Families also carry a serious burden and strive to understand and support their loved ones without the right support or information. Plus, people don’t talk about it openly, so no one learns. Without public discussion, people don’t know much about frequent issues like depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder. This relies on unproven remedies that lead to false diagnosis, people, people trying to treat themselves, and only exacerbate the problem. Also, mental illness is not treated well or at all, so people produce less in the workplace and have a large financial expense as they increase their money for healthcare.

However, things change slowly. More news, speaking celebrities, and groups for mental health bring mental health into everyday discussions. Campaigns to raise awareness, nurture people, and acquire the right and wrong ideas are gaining strength. More and more people are brave enough to share their stories, encourage others, get help, and build a sense of community. Young people in particular are willing to talk about mental health and use social media to reduce shame. Schools and jobs also begin to understand how important intellectual wells are by launching new programs and support systems. To truly stop shame, you need many different approaches to work together. This means a massive public campaign to teach all mental illnesses, indicating that it is a real medical illness that can be treated like a physical illness. It also means that mental health education brings education to school lessons, and that children learn to understand and familiarity at younger ages. It is important that the village, in particular, has spiritual experts and services, can be achieved easily and affordably at a more affordable price. More money spent on stronger government rules and mental health is extremely important to building a great support system. And finally, it is important that people feel comfortable expressing themselves, sharing their experiences, and seeking help without fear. That’s what we have to do. By creating a culture that is friendly, understandable and accepted, we can ensure that mental illness is no longer a hidden secret and is a top priority for everyone.
