A 19-year-old Muslim student of BCom was allegedly set on fire in broad daylight outside Hindu College in Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad on Thursday, police said. The incident has led to panic in the areas and raised questions about the safety of the students.
The sequence of the incident occurred when the student, identified as Farhad Ali, stepped out of the examination hall and was attacked thereafter. He was rushed to the hospital, as he sustained injuries, police revealed.
Witnesses said the flames quickly engulfed Ali’s clothes, prompting students and passers-by to rush to his aid. Several people used water bottles and pieces of cloth to douse the fire before shifting him to a private hospital.
His friend, Deepak Singh Chauhan, recounted that soon after the exam ended, as they were walking through the first-floor corridor, the attackers suddenly stopped Farhad and carried out the assault. He was later referred to the district hospital, where doctors said he sustained about eight percent burn injuries, mostly on his thighs, and is in stable condition.
Police said Farhad sustained around eight percent burn injuries, mainly on his thighs. He was first taken to a private hospital on Delhi Road and later shifted to the district hospital. His condition is stable.
“It seems a petrol-filled bottle, possibly a crude petrol bomb, was used. Forensic samples are being collected to confirm this. An FIR is being registered, and efforts are on to trace the accused,” Moradabad City SP Kumar Ranvijay Singh said.
