The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has responded to media reports regarding a disturbing incident in a private school in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, where a teacher allegedly instructed fellow students to physically assault a seven-year-old Muslim student based on his faith. The incident, captured in a viral video on August 25, has ignited public outcry and calls for swift action against the teacher and the school.
The NHRC, taking suo moto cognisance of the matter, has issued an official notice to the Uttar Pradesh government. The Commission has deemed the incident, if proven true, as a violation of the victim’s human rights. The teacher, identified as Tripta Tyagi (60), reportedly made derogatory remarks about “Mohammedan children ” and encouraged the classmates to slap the young boy forcefully.
As a consequence, the private school in Khubbapur village has been sealed by district authorities. The NHRC’s notice extends to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, Uttar Pradesh, demanding a comprehensive report within a span of four weeks. This report is expected to encompass actions taken against the teacher, the current status of the filed First Information Report (FIR), any compensation provided to the affected family, and preventive measures planned to avert similar incidents in the future.

The Uttar Pradesh police have lodged a case against the teacher for non-cognizable offenses, resulting in a Non-Cognizable Report (NCR) that requires judicial intervention to initiate further action. In contrast to a First Information Report (FIR), which empowers the police to independently launch investigations, an NCR mandates judge-ordered action before police involvement. Consequently, the online hashtag #ArrestTriptaTyagi has gained traction, amplifying demands for the teacher’s accountability.
