A Mumbai court on Sunday remanded a 30-year-old man to police custody until January 24 in connection with the Saif Ali Khan attack case.
The Mumbai Police presented the accused before a holiday court in Bandra at 1:30 PM.
Actor Saif Ali Khan was stabbed multiple times in the early hours of January 16 by an intruder attempting a burglary at his luxury apartment in Mumbai’s Bandra area.
Saif Ali Khan sustained six stab wounds during the 2 AM incident and was rushed to Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. Doctors later confirmed that his condition was stable and out of danger.
Early Sunday morning, police reported apprehending the attacker from Hiranandani Estate on Ghodbunder Road in Thane district.
The police identified the attacker as Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, a Bangladeshi national who had illegally entered India and assumed the alias Bijoy Das.
The police stated that the attacker, originally from Jhalokati in Bangladesh, had been residing in Mumbai for over five months, working in menial jobs.
The accused’s lawyer, meanwhile, argued that the police lack evidence to substantiate their claim of his client being a Bangladeshi national.
The lawyer asserted that his client has been residing in Thane for over seven years and that his family lives in Mumbai.
“A police custody for 5 days has been granted. The court has asked the police to submit a report within 5 days. The police have no proof that he is a Bangladeshi,” the accused Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad’s advocate, Sandeep Shekhane, told reporters, according to ANI.
He added: “They (police) said that he came here 6 months ago, it is a wrong statement. He has been living here for more than 7 years. His family is in Mumbai… This is a clear-cut violation of 43A. No proper investigation has been done…”
