The situation in Manipur remained tense but under control on Wednesday reportedly after students clashed with security forces during their march to Raj Bhavan.Meanwhile, the Curfew which was imposed in the state’s capital Imphal on Tuesday afternoon continues in effect with additional security forces. “The situation remains tense but under control,” a senior officer said.
A day before the student clash broke out , the Government issued an order, stating that the suspension of internet services in the wake of intensified agitation by students applies only to the five valley districts.
Student Protest
In the new development the agitated students attempted to march towards the Raj Bhavan in Imphal to press. The students marched with the demands to remove the DGP and security advisor to the state government.
To disperse the students, the police had reportedly fired gas shells on the students who were accused of pelting stones in Khwairamband and Kakwa Naorem Leikai areas in the state capital.
According to the students body, more than 55 students were injured in the clashes and admitted to RIMS hospital
The Raj Bhvan’s Statement
In a statement issued late on Tuesday night, The Raj Bhavan said, “Representatives of students met Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya and submitted a memorandum.”
The statement reportedly urged the Government to take proper steps in the best interests of the students and the people of Manipur.
Internet Shut Down
The Manipur government has suspended internet services across the entire state for five days started on Tuesday. The internet shut down was reportedly made to prevent the spread of hate speech, images and videos.
According to the details, the suspension covers mobile data, broadband, VPN services and other communication lines.“Temporary suspension/curbing of internet and mobile data services including Lease Lines, VSATs, broadbands and VPN services (were ordered) in the territorial jurisdiction of the state of Manipur for five days with effect from 3 PM of September 10 to till 3 PM of September 15,” the notification stated.
Security forces used tear gas to disperse student and women protesters marching towards Raj Bhavan, amid growing unrest. Demonstrators are demanding the removal of the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) and security advisor, according to officials.
