“This shrine was part of our lives for generations,” Bulldozer Action in Sitapur Creates Anguish Over Demolition of Mazar

Date:

Tension gripped Mahmudabad tehsil of Uttar Pradesh’s Sitapur district on Monday after the local administration razed several shops and a decades-old mazar at Miya Sarai intersection, citing illegal encroachment on government land. The demolition drive, overseen by District Magistrate Abhishek Anand, was carried out under heavy security with police and PAC personnel deployed to the spot.

Officials said the land in question, valued at nearly ₹2 crore, had been registered as barren government property but had gradually been occupied over the past three decades. “This was a long-pending matter of encroachment. The government cannot allow its land to be misused,” asserted ADM Nitish Kumar Singh.

Many Muslims in the area regarded the mazar as a site of spiritual and communal importance. “This shrine was part of our lives for generations,” said Mohammed Iqbal, a resident, as reported by the Clarion media.“Seeing it demolished is heartbreaking. It feels like an attack on our beliefs.” Shopkeeper Tariq Ansari said, and the Clarion media reported.

What Do Authorities Have to Say?

Authorities maintained that several attempts had been made in the past to persuade people to vacate the land peacefully, but resistance forced the administration to act. Police sealed the area during the drive to prevent unrest, and the district administration has warned that similar steps will be taken against illegal structures elsewhere in Sitapur.

Yet, the decision has stirred debate over the handling of religious sites that, while technically unauthorized, have been standing for decades. Community leaders argued that dialogue and sensitivity were missing from the process. “When a religious place carries history and faith for so many people, demolishing it outright risks disturbing harmony,” said Maulana Shahid, a local elder.

The incident has now become a flashpoint between legal enforcement and cultural sentiment. While the administration insists its operation was within the law, residents of Sitapur are left grieving the loss of both livelihoods and heritage.
