Three Muslims Lynched in BJP-Ruled Assam Days Ahead of State Elections

Date:

Three Muslims have been lynched to death and one left fatally injured in Assam’s Nagaon district days before the state goes to polls.  The incident occurred at No. 1 Kathpara village, which falls under the jurisdiction of Ruphihat Police Station in Kalabar Co-District. The sequence of the incident, as described by Nagoan Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Abotani Doley, took place at around 2 am, when a mob of 10-12 armed dacoits barged into a house and tied up the occupants. Following this, the mob took the family’s six-year-old daughter at knifepoint and ransacked the house, particularly for cash and jewelry.

Soon after the gang fled, the family alerted the neighbors, resulting in a crowd chasing and apprehending four of the suspected group members.

As the gang ran away, the family shouted for help, drawing neighbors out of their homes. A crowd chased the suspects and caught four of them. They were severely beaten by the mob before the police arrived.

Two men died at the spot, and a third succumbed to injuries after being taken to Nagoan Medical College and Hospital. Meanwhile, the fourth remains in a critical condition.

The incident occurred ahead of the openly threatening statement passed by the Chief Minister saying, “Break the backbone of Miyas,” referring to Muslims. In yet another incident of hate, in February 2026, the official BJP Assam X handle posted a video that showed Himanta Biswa Sarma symbolically firing a rifle at AI-generated images of Muslims, reading the caption “point-blank shot.” However, the video was later deleted.

Since May 2021, when Himanta Biswa Sarma assumed office as Chief Minister, more than 22,000 structures have been demolished in Assam, leading to the eviction of over 20,000 Muslim families—an overwhelming majority of them Bengali-speaking.

The trend predates his tenure. Since 2016, over 17,600 families, mostly Bengali Muslims, have been evicted across the state, with nearly 5,000 evictions recorded since June 2025 alone.

Demolition drives have intensified in recent months. In January 2026, around 1,200 homes were razed in Sonitpur district, followed by the demolition of 516 houses in Hailakandi in February 2026.
