Newly inaugurated President Donald Trump on Monday announced he would sign an executive order to begin developing the ‘Iron Dome’ air defense system, a campaign promise he made during the presidential election.
The Iron Dome is a mobile air defense system created by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries to intercept and destroy short-range rockets and artillery shells targeting populated areas.
The capabilities of the Iron Dome have been demonstrated in various instances, including the Israel-Hamas conflict that began on October 7, 2023, and the Iranian missile strikes on Israel in October 2024. These events showcased the system’s effectiveness in intercepting and destroying incoming threats targeting civilian areas.
Donald Trump urged for the immediate construction of a state-of-the-art Iron Dome missile defense system, according to AFP, during a Republican congressional retreat in Miami on the day Pete Hegseth was sworn in as the new Defense Secretary.
Upon arriving at the Pentagon, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told reporters that his first day would be busy, with plans for additional executive orders, including the removal of DEI programs from the Pentagon, reinstating troops discharged due to COVID-19 mandates, and fast-tracking the Iron Dome for America.
The Iron Dome was developed to safeguard civilian areas from missile threats, particularly in regions with minimal warning time. The system detects incoming projectiles, tracks their path, and assesses whether they will strike populated areas or critical infrastructure. If a threat is identified, Iron Dome launches an interceptor missile to destroy the projectile mid-air before it can reach its target.
The Iron Dome has been highly effective in saving lives, particularly during conflicts involving rocket fire from groups like Hamas in Gaza. With a high success rate, it has become a crucial element of Israel’s defense strategy since its deployment in 2011.
