BJP candidate Maithili Thakur is making the headlines and grabbing attention in the Bihar election. The singer-turned-politician is ahead by 8,551 votes after 11 rounds of counting, as per the latest data released from the Election Commission of India.
“This is like a dream. People have a lot of expectations of me… This will be my first term as an MLA, and I will do my best for my constituency… I will serve my people as their daughter… I can only see Alinagar right now and how I can work them…” Maithili Thakur said, talking to ANI.
Earlier this month, Thakur claimed to change the name of the constituency from Alinagar to Sitanagar on winning the election, which she reiterated to India Today this morning.
Bihar logged an impressive 67.13 percent turnout in its two-phase polling on November 6 and 11, and that momentum is now visible inside the counting centers. With 2,616 candidates vying for 243 seats, the spotlight is firmly on Alinagar, where the initial trends are beginning to shape an intriguing narrative.
The singer-turned-politician entered politics two weeks before the polls, while her popularity gained attention after her appearance on Rising Star India, gaining followers on social media. Her surge is drawing attention, especially since the BJP has not secured Alinagar even once since the constituency was created in 2008.
She hails from Benipatti in the Madhubani district of Bihar and graduated from Bharti College, University of Delhi. Thakur is a smooth singer who learned music from his father and grandfather. She, along with her family, later moved to New Delhi to enhance her growth. She holds assets worth close to four crore rupees, owns gold valued at 53 lakh, and keeps 1.8 lakh in cash.
