Hindu activist Puneeth Kerehalli has been released from custody after a case registered against him under the Goonda Act was overturned by the Karnataka government. Kerehalli, known for his involvement in cow protection activities and serving as heads OF Rashtra Rakshana Pade, had been arrested and sent to Agrahara Jail in Parappa August 2022.
Kerehalli challenged his arrest in the Karnataka High Court, asserting its illegality and presenting compelling legal grounds for his release. In response, the government established an advisory committee to conduct a thorough inquiry into the matter. The committee’s report, released recently, stated that there were insufficient grounds to justify Kerehalli’s detention.
Following the report, on September 16, the Under Secretary of the Home Administration Department (Law & Order) issued an order instructing the Bangalore City Police Commissioner, Bandarangayya NR, to release Puneeth Kerehalli from custody. This development marks the first instance where a case registered under the Goonda Act has been quashed.
The arrest of Puneeth Kerehalli under the Goonda Act had generated considerable controversy and public debate. Many had questioned the grounds on which he was detained, and his release has sparked discussions about the implementation of the Goonda Act.
Earlier, on August 24, the Karnataka High Court had issued a notice to the state government, the city police commissioner, and the CCB police regarding Puneeth Kerehalli’s arrest under the Goonda Act.
