Why Bharat Bandh?
A nationwide strike ‘bharat bandh’ has been called in response to a recent Supreme Court ruling on reservations for scheduled castes and scheduled tribes. The ruling, allows the states to create subcategories within these groups and has erupted significant opposition from groups of Dalits and Adivasi organizations. According to the reports, as many as 21 organizations have called for bharat bandh, these organizations include, the Reservation Bachao Sangharsh Samiti (RBSS) and the National Confederation of Dalit and Adivasi Organisations (NACDAOR)
The verdict came on August 1, the Supreme Court held that states are constitutionally empowered to make sub classifications within the SCs, which form a socially heterogeneous class. The apex court, however, made it clear that states have to make sub-classification on the basis of “quantifiable and demonstrable data” of backwardness and representation in government jobs and not on “whims” and as a matter of “political expediency”.
