A case has been lodged over a fake and AI-generated video that falsely demonstrates MP and Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) President Asaduddin Owaisi. The complaint has been lodged by Mohammed Irfan Khan, an administrative member of the AIMIM.
Authorities allege that several social media accounts circulated doctored videos intended to spread misinformation, offend public sentiments, and stir communal discord. On this complaint, a case has been filed under the Information Technology Act, 2008, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The Regulation of Deepfake Bill, introduced by Shiv Sena leader Shrikant Shinde in the Lok Sabha on Friday, seeks to safeguard citizens by requiring that creators obtain prior consent from anyone featured in deepfake content.
The Bill also proposes penalties for those who create or circulate deepfake content with malicious intent.
In yet another case, earlier this year, AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi lodged a complaint with Hyderabad Police after a deepfake video surfaced online showing him endorsing fraudulent investment schemes. The manipulated clip, generated using artificial intelligence, falsely uses Owaisi’s likeness and voice to promote a scam that claims viewers can earn ₹53,000 per day.
The video has been circulating across social media platforms, prompting concerns about its potential to deceive the public. Police officials said the doctored content was created with the clear intention of misleading people into believing that Owaisi was backing the investment plan.
