Death Toll in Gaza Surpasses 64,600 as 6 more die of starvation, Says Health Ministry

Date:

At least 64,605 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s ongoing military campaign in the Gaza Strip since October 2023, according to the territory’s Health Ministry. The ministry reported that six more people died of starvation in the past 24 hours in the besieged enclave, underscoring the deepening humanitarian crisis.

In its latest update on Tuesday, the ministry said that 83 bodies were recovered and 223 others wounded in the past day, bringing the total number of injuries to 163,319 since the conflict began.

“Many victims remain trapped under rubble or lie on roads inaccessible to rescuers,” the ministry added, highlighting the dire conditions and limited emergency response.

The statement also noted that 14 Palestinians were killed and over 37 injured by Israeli forces while attempting to access humanitarian aid—raising the number of those killed while seeking food and assistance to 2,444, with more than 17,831 wounded since May 27.

Famine continues to take a devastating toll. The ministry said six more Palestinians, including children, succumbed to malnutrition and starvation in the past 24 hours, bringing the famine-related death toll to 399, among them 140 children.

Since the UN-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) declared Gaza a famine zone last month, 121 people have died, including 25 children.

Israel’s complete closure of Gaza’s border crossings since March 2 has cut off vital aid and supplies, pushing the territory’s 2.4 million residents deeper into starvation.

The Israeli military resumed its assault on Gaza on March 18, killing 12,059 people and injuring 51,278, following the collapse of a January ceasefire and prisoner exchange deal.

In a historic move last November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Gaza.
