Lebanon Rules Out Any Prospect of Normalising Ties with Israel, Says Parliament Speaker

Date:

Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri ruled out the idea of normalizing relations with Israel and stated that the Lebanese position was unchanged in the face of increased Israeli assaults on their border.

Per Xinhua News Agency and interviewed by Asharq Al-Awsat, Berri stated that indirect negotiations would have to ensure the participation of all parties to the conflict: Lebanon, Israel, the U.S., France, and the U.N, and that civilian experts might also be included as needed, similar to the inclusion of civilian experts in geology and mapping that defined the Blue Line in 2000.

Berri followed and stated, the Lebanese position will never change “Israeli threats and air strikes” and Lebanon will be committed to its position internally in relation to the tension at the border.

In fact, it was reported that in spite of the announced cease-fire between Hezbollah and Israel, which began on 27 November 2024, the Israeli army carried out limited air strikes at continued toward the Lebanese border, noting repeatedly that the IDF air strikes were operations against Hezbollah positions that they believed were contributing to tensions at the border, in the meantime, keeping troops deep into Lebanon at several sites on their border with Lebanon.

The Lebanese National News Agency reported three people were killed while eleven were reported wounded in Israeli air raids against vehicles in eastern and southern Lebanon.
