CBI Charges Former Punjab DGP and Ex-Minister Wife with Murder in Son’s Death Case

At the request of the Haryana government, the CBI commenced to investigate the purported murder of Aqil Akhtter. Aqil, the son of former Punjab DGP Mohammad Mustafa and former PWD minister Razia Sultana, died under suspicious conditions at his residence in Panchkula on October 16, 2025.

In a report from the CBI, the family had been at odds for several months. In a video recorded on August 27, Aqil stated that he had discovered an illicit relationship between his father and his wife. Aqil later claimed that he and his family, including his mother & sister, were either conspiring to kill him or framing him in a false case.

The investigation into the case that was started at Mansa Devi Complex police station in Panchkula, was taken over by the CBI after a notification was received by the Department of Personnel and Training that conferred power to the central agency to takeover the inquiry. The FIR identified as accused parties Mustafa, Sultana, sister and the wife of Aqil.

Reports suggested that Aqil died due to an overdose of drugs, but considering the existence of the video statement, and gives some credence to the allegations, the state police’s complaint suggested that the actions would neccessarily proceed on the basis of foul play. In the video, Aqil states
