The Manipur government has issued a stern warning to a student group that has demanded Friday to be declared as a weekly holiday in the state. The group, called Joint Student’s Body (JSB), is based in Churachandpur district and has reportedly circulated a “public reminder” on social media about its demand.
The state government has termed the demand as “totally illegal” and said that it would not tolerate any attempt to rename institutions and places or adopt a resolution for observing Friday as a holiday by the government offices, schools and colleges in Churachandpur town. The government said that such actions would undermine the reputation and integrity of the government institutions and establishments.
The Chief Secretary of Manipur, Vineet Joshi, has written a letter to all the District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police of all districts, asking them to take necessary steps to enforce the orders. He also advised all the institutions, establishments and autonomous bodies to ensure strict attendance of staff and students on Fridays, signaling a zero-tolerance approach to the JSB’s demand. He said that anyone found violating the orders would face legal consequences.
The government also appealed to the public to not fall for such posts and to not indulge in any violence. It said that the state government respects the sentiments and aspirations of all communities and groups, but it would not allow any unlawful activities that disturb the peace and harmony of the state.
Churachandpur district has been a hotspot for communal violence, particularly between the Meiteis and Kukis. Since May 2023, the conflict has claimed over 175 lives, underscoring the delicacy of the region’s communal harmony.
