Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) candidate from Gujarat’s Surat, Mukesh Dalal, won the Lok Sabha elections unopposed after the nomination paper of Congress’ pick was rejected and other candidates withdrew from the race.
Surrounding the controversy, the Congress Party has urged that the poll be suspended, citing worries about their candidate’s disappearance and alleged irregularities.
The Congress candidate, Nilesh Kumbhani, was rejected by the state Election Commission (EC) for alleged inconsistencies in his candidacy.
Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi expressed serious doubt, describing the scenario as “patent bad faith.” He said, “He emphasized, “In Surat, we demand that elections be delayed. The candidate has been missing for many hours. Every other candidate has withdrawn his or her candidacy. We have asked the Election Commission to postpone the elections. It is a case of patent bad faith.”
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel added to the controversy by congratulating Dalal, escalating tensions between the major parties.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh expressed his concerns on Twitter, implying a deliberate attempt to manipulate the electoral process in Surat. He tweeted, “Democracy is being threatened.” Aa chronology samajhiye,” emphasizing a chain of events that led to Dalal’s uncontested triumph.
Ramesh’s tweet detailed the rejection of Congress candidates’ nominations and the subsequent withdrawal of all other contestants, leaving Dalal as the solitary candidate who was eventually declared the winner.
In response, the BJP supported Dalal’s victory and denied claims made by the Congress. Gujarat BJP media cell chief Zubin Ashara cited historical examples of candidates winning unchallenged, emphasizing that Dalal’s victory was not exceptional.
Ashara emphasized, “Mukesh Dalal ji is the first BJP member to win unopposed,” citing previous occasions across party lines where candidates won without a contest.
The electoral instability in Surat has sparked a heated political debate, with both parties standing firm in their beliefs. As the nation prepares for the next Lok Sabha elections, the integrity of the electoral process remains a source of contention, casting doubt on the nation’s democratic foundation.
