Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi upped the ante on Tuesday against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Rahul Gandhi who is currently on a three day trip to the united states launched a vitriolic attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said the PM has been “psychologically trapped” since the general elections brought unexpected results for the ruling party.
Accusing Narendra Modi, the opposition leader said congress fought the general elections with its account frozen and still managed to destroy what he called Narendra Modi’s idea of India.
“I was watching the (Lok Sabha) elections…At a point in the elections, we sat down with our treasurer, and he said, ‘Look, the bank accounts are frozen’. The Congress party fought the elections with their bank accounts frozen and destroyed the idea of Modi,” he said.
“You can see it because when you see the prime minister now in Parliament… he is psychologically trapped, and he basically cannot come to terms, he cannot understand how this has happened,” he added.
Mocking at PM Modi, Gandhi said he knew modi was blown apart when he claimed he can directly have words with God.
“Halfway through the campaign, Modi didn’t think that he was near 300-400 seats…We were getting information from regular sources, some of the intelligence agencies…it was very clear. There was this internal thing going on in the Prime Minister that I could see…he (PM Modi) was in Gujarat for many years, never faced adversity, and became Prime Minister of India. And suddenly, this idea started to crack,” Rahul said.
“We knew when he said that I speak directly to God. We knew that there we had blown him apart…We saw it as a psychological collapse,” he added.
‘Destroyed Idea of Modi’
Speaking at an interaction with students at the prestigious Georgetown University, Rahul Gandhi said he believed he had destroyed the idea of prime minister in recent elections.
“There is a design element in the Congress party that has been in place since Mahatma Gandhi’s time, and it has certain qualities as a political organisation that are very powerful. I was watching the elections, and there was a point when we sat down with the treasurer, who said, ‘Look, your bank accounts are frozen. How are you supposed to fight an election if your accounts are frozen?’ We really didn’t have an answer then,” Gandhi said
“Yet, the Congress Party fought the election and essentially destroyed the idea of Modi. You can see this because, when you watch the prime minister in Parliament now…he’s psychologically trapped. He cannot come to terms with it; he is psychologically trapped,” the Rae Bareli MP, on his maiden visit to the United States as the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, added.
BJP could not have won 240 seats in ‘fair election’
Highlighting the recent lok sabha election results. The congress leader said the Lok Sabha elections were far from ‘free and fair’ otherwise the BJP could not have won 240 seats. “I don’t believe that in a fair election, the BJP would come anywhere near 240 seats. I would be surprised. They had a huge financial advantage and had locked our bank accounts. The Election Commission was doing what they wanted. The entire campaign was structured so that Mr Modi could carry out his agenda across the country, with different designs for different states. I don’t see it as a free election,” he added.
“I was watching the elections, and there was a point when we sat down with the treasurer, who said, ‘Look, your bank accounts are frozen. How are you supposed to fight an election if your bank accounts are frozen?’ We really didn’t have an answer then. Yet the Congress Party fought the election and essentially destroyed the idea of Modi,” Gandhi added.
In the next two or three months we will win these elections…Undoing the damage that BJP and RSS have done to our institutions is a much deeper problem and that is not going to get solved so easily and so simply…There is a huge set of structures that are being used to attack the opposition – investigative agencies, the legal system that continues which has to stop. The real challenge is to make institutions neutral again,” further said.
