Moradabad: Following ‘Burqa Row,’ and Alleged ‘Religious Conversion’ One Girl Sent out of Town, Another Stops Tuitions

Date:

It began with a usual day, the same gala time, without worries.  A group of friends, including five Muslim girls and one Hindu girl,  walked together, talking and laughing, which soon collapsed after a purported video  surfaced. A viral controversy and police case followed.

The footage shows a group of girls laughing while a Hindu girl is given a burqa. In the background, one girl can be heard commenting that she would look good in it.

Rajeev Chaudhary, whose CCTV camera recorded the incident, said local residents had alerted him to what had occurred. He explained that some women sitting nearby mentioned that a Hindu girl was being asked to wear a burqa, resulting  him checking the CCTV footage. After reviewing the recording, he shared it with the police. Chaudhary added that he was unaware of how the video later circulated widely on social media, the FoEJ Media learned.

“The CCTV footage is from December 20, 2025. A burqa is visible in the footage, and we are investigating why the girls had an extra burqa. The FIR was registered on January 22 after the video began circulating on social media,” Inspector Ashok Kumar, the investigating officer in the case, told the Indian Express.

Later, these Muslim girls were booked under UP’s Anti-Conversion Act for allegedly attempting to persuade a minor girl from another community to wear a burqa in Moradabad.

After the filing of an FIR, at least one has been sent to her grandfather’s house, and at least one has stopped attending tuition classes, which were an imperative part for her NEET exam, the FoEJ Media learned.

The family of the accused alleged that this is a case of misunderstanding that girls did in their childishness. Meanwhile, a Hindu girl of the group alleged that she was pressured by other girls to put on a burqa while they were returning from the classes, the FoEJ Media learned.

However, the uncle of one of the accused alleged that the girl carried a burqa only to help Hindu girls to avoid being seen by the family as they were planning to go out for snacks.

The case remains under investigation and no arrests have been made. “Preliminary inquiry indicates that the girls knew each other and studied together… We are investigating the allegations in detail. No arrests have been made so far,” Additional Superintendent of Police, Moradabad, Kunwar Akash Singh told Indian Express
