A 55 year old woman allegedly died from a “panic attack” at Khatai village in Bijnor district on Monday reportedly after a team of police raided her residence on suspicion of beef stored in her house. The woman was identified as Razia (55) who was a resident of the Khatai village. The police reportedly conducted the raid on suspicion of violation of the anti-cow slaughter law in Uttar Pradesh, which prohibits cow slaughter, and the sale or transport of beef. However, the police did not find any “objectionable materials” from her house.
Bijnor Superintendent of Police Abhishek Jha revealed that a woman called UP-112, a police emergency service and reported cow slaughter at Razia’s house.
“An inquiry has been ordered. Necessary legal action will be taken against the informer for providing biased information, and also against the police officers if our probe finds them guilty,” said Bijnor Superintendent of Police Abhishek Jha and The Indian Express quoted.
According to the details collected, the family of the woman has alleged that the policemen misbehaved with her during the raid at their home at Khatai Village.
“The four police constables barged into our house and misbehaved with the women members of the family. They ransacked the household while we kept pleading. My mother had a panic attack due to the behavior of the cops. We took her to a local clinic, where the doctor pronounced her dead,” said her son Nasim and The Indian Express reported.
“They ransacked the household articles while we pleaded that we had not stored anything banned in the state,” said Naseem, the husband of the deceased. “My wife had a panic attack due to the police’s behavior. Shortly after the cops left, she collapsed. We rushed her to the local clinic, where the doctor pronounced her dead,” he added, reported the Times of India.
Jai Bhagwan Singh, Station House Officer (SHO) of Kiratpur police station, said the woman’s death had nothing to do with the police raid. “Razia was an asthma patient and had been undergoing treatment for the past few years,” Singh said.
Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party MLA from Nagina, Manoj Kumar Paras, along with local leaders and Muslim clerics, met with the district police chief, calling for stricter action against the constables involved in the raid. Paras emphasized his duty as a representative to protect his constituents from harassment by the police or any anti-social elements.
