Following the tragic shooting on a train between Jaipur and Mumbai, where Railway Protection Force (RPF) Constable Chetan Singh was accused of shooting dead his senior colleague and three passengers, the Ministry of Railways at first denied the constable had a mental illness during his most recent periodic medical exam. The authorities later withdrew the statement, though.
“The press release has been withdrawn,” a Railway spokesperson said, without elaborating.
As per officials, Constable Chetan Singh was arrested after reportedly shooting his senior colleague and three other passengers on a moving train close to the Palghar railway station with an automatic weapon.
The Ministry of Railways emphasized that the Government Railway Police (GRP), Borivali is currently looking into the incident despite media reports suggesting the constable had “abnormal hallucinations” and was diagnosed with a major anxiety disorder.
“In this regard, it is stated that there is a system of Periodical Medical Examination (PME) of Railway Protection Force constables, and in the last PME, no such medical ailment/ condition was detected,” the initial statement read.
RPF train escort staff Constable Chetan Singh, who was on duty, killed his supervisory officer and three Muslim passengers on a train traveling from Jaipur to Mumbai at approximately 5:23 am on July 31. While standing next to the body of one of the people he killed, Chetan Singh was seen in a social media video hailing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Adityanath.
