During the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra today, Congress workers were stopped from entering Guwahati city while clashing with the Assam police. Mentioning the brutality of the attack, Rahul Gandhi intensified his attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and described him as one of the most corrupt CMs in the country.
“Clear problem in Assam, chief minister of this state, one of the most corrupt CMs in the country… What the Assam CM is doing against the yatra is actually helping the yatra. We are getting publicity that we may not have gotten otherwise. The Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra has become a main issue in Assam. Preventing them from visiting the temple and college is their style. Intimidation tactics: We are not intimidated by them; we are not afraid of them, Rahul Ghandi said in a press conference.
Directing the state police to file a case against Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday, the chief minister accused him of “provoking a crowd” during the ongoing Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.
While trying to enter on Tuesday with nearly 5,000 Congress workers, Rahul Gandhi intercepted after the party restarted its flagship ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ in Assam today. After the incident, the clash between the party workers and the police was witnessed, and police barriers were broken. In return, the police answered with a lathi charge to disperse the crowd.
Rahul Gandhi said his party workers would never break the rules and disrupt law and order; however, “this doesn’t mean that we are weak.” While addressing a gathering close to the Guwahati border, Rahul Gandhi didn’t refrain from calling her workers “baber Sher.”
Making his position on the top of a bus, Rahul Gandhi said, “Assam CM, the Union Home Minister, and the PM can break the rules, but we (Congress) would never do such a thing.”
Not only did Rahul Gandhi blame the CM for calling upon the police, but he also alleged that Union Home Minister Amit Shah instructed the Assam CM to stop him from meeting students, which was scheduled for today.
While making allegations of “enslaving” the students, Rahul said, “The Home Minister of the country picked up the phone and called CM Himanta and said that Rahul Gandhi should not meet the students of Assam. That’s not important, whether Rahul Gandhi comes here or not. What’s important is that the students be allowed to listen to whomever they want to. But it is not happening in any schools or colleges in Assam. You are being told that you cannot speak your language. You are being told that you cannot have your history.”
On Friday, January 19, in Majuli (Assam), Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh claimed that the party’s first Bharat Jodo Yatra from south to north had not faced as many problems, but only while passing through BJP-ruled states did they face clashes. He mentioned Asaam as the second BJP-led state to be encountered.
While mentioning the FIR lodged against the Yatra, he confirmed that there was ‘no power’ that could prevent the Yatra from completing its next six days. The journey is to be continued through the state until January 25, which will be a total of 833 km across 17 districts.
