Fifty three people died and sixty two injured in an earthquake of magnitude 7.1 that hit Tibet near the Nepalese border today. The quake was reportedly felt in some parts of India, including Bihar, Assam and West Bengal.
“Fifty-three people have been confirmed dead, and 62 others injured as of Tuesday noon, after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake jolted Dingri County in the city of Xigaze in Xizang (Tibet) Autonomous Region at 9:05 am Tuesday,” Chinese state-owned Xinhua news agency said, as quoted by AFP.
The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) stated that the earthquake occurred at 6: 35 AM (IST) at the epicentre at latitude 28.86 degrees North and longitude 87.51 degrees East, at a depth of 10 kilometres.
Two other earthquakes of magnitude 4.7 and 4.9 were recorded at 7:02 am at depth of 10 km and 7:07 am at depth of 30 km respectively.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reports that the earthquake struck 93 kilometers northeast of Lobuche, close to the Nepal-Tibet border. Lobuche, situated near the Khumbu Glacier, is roughly 150 kilometers east of Kathmandu and about 8.5 kilometers southwest of Everest Base Camp.
