Bittu Bajrangi, also known as Raj Kumar, a key accused in the Nuh violence case, has been granted bail by a district court after spending 15 days in jail. Bittu was arrested on August 15 for spreading communal unrest and stopping police officials from carrying out their duties in Haryana’s Nuh district. He was sent to 14-day judicial custody two days after his arrest.
According to the FIR against him by Haryana Police, Bittu is accused of spreading communal hatred against one community through his videos posted on Meta. He also allegedly misbehaved with Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Usha. As the officer tried to stop him from heading to the yatra and confiscated the weapons carried by a group of men present with him near Nalhar temple on July 31, Bittu and his followers allegedly threatened the cops. The FIR against him further states that he sat on the bonnet of Usha’s vehicle.
The Additional District Judge Sandeep Kumar Duggal who heard the matter and granted bail to Bittu, ordered the release of the accused after furnishing a bail bond of Rs 50,000.
Bittu was arrested on charges of IPC Section 148 for rioting, armed with a deadly weapon; Section 149, unlawful assembly; Section 332, voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from his duty; Section 353, assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty; and Section 186, obstructing a public servant in discharge of public functions, including Sections 395, 397, and 506.
In the aftermath of stone pelting at VHP’s ‘Brij Mandal Jalabhishek on July 31, communal violence broke out in Nuh. The violence had spread into the nearby city of Gurugram, with cars being attacked with stones and set ablaze. At least six people lost their lives in the riots, including a Muslim cleric and two home guards.
An FIR was registered against Bittu on August 1, 2023, after his video surfaced on the internet in which he was seen threatening a community and also claimed that 150 cars were headed to Nuh.
The FIR states that “he was trying to incite people against a particular religion.” Haryana Police has so far filed over 102 FIRs in connection to Nuh violence, and 200 people have been booked.”
