New Delhi, 2 August, 2023: Following violent conflicts that occurred on Monday during a religious parade organized by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) in Haryana’s Nuh, the Haryana Police made 116 arrests and filed roughly 29 FIRs late on Tuesday. In the communal riots that started in Nuh in Haryana, at least five people have died, including two home guards, a civilian, and an Imam.
Meanwhile, fresh violence in Gurugram on Tuesday night left Delhi on high alert. All government and private educational institutions in the Sohna sub-division of Gurugram have been ordered to remain closed on Wednesday (August 2) in view of the communal unrest in the area.
Realm of protest
A protest against the riots in the Mewat region has been scheduled for today by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). A Mahapanchayat has been scheduled for Wednesday at 4pm at the Bhisam Das Mandir in Manesar by the VHP and Bajrang Dal. On Wednesday, the right-wing group will also organize a “major demonstration” in Noida. Rahul Dubey, the VHP’s director of publicity, announced that the protest march would leave from the Noida stadium in Sector 21A and travel to Rajnigandha Chowk in Sector 16 to see the burning of an effigy.
A restaurant in Gurugram’s Badshahpur was set on fire on Tuesday by a crowd, one day after fighting broke out in Nuh. Nearby stores were also vandalized. The mob screamed “Jai Shri Ram” in front of a mosque in the region while ransacking stores owned by one community. After the violence, the Badshahpur market was shut down.
Agitation for national capital
On Tuesday night, new violence in Gurugram raised a warning in Delhi. The Gurugram Police advised people not to believe or pay attention to claims on social media and to call 112 for assistance instead. ‘Incidents of arson and skirmishes’, according to the police.
Dushyant Chautala, the deputy chief minister of Haryana, attributed the violence to those in charge of the VHP-led religious parade. “The yatra organizers did not give the administration complete information, which is why such a major incident took place,” he claimed.
The Gurugram District Magistrate prohibited the sale of loose diesel and gasoline at fuel stations throughout the district as a result of the ongoing communal unrest. The tweet stated that it was “strictly forbidden for all fuel stations operating in Gurugram to sell loose petrol/diesel to any person with immediate effect.”
The families of the home guards who died received an ex-gratia payment of Rs 57 lakh from the Haryana Police. The communal confrontations that started in Nuh, Haryana, claimed the lives of two home guards.
Manohar Lal Khattar, the chief minister of Haryana, said that the Nuh attack was a part of a bigger plot, and the VHP urged that the National Investigation Agency conduct an investigation. The CM of Haryana threatened the offenders with harsh punishment. “No rioter will be spared,” he declared.
