A man was confronted by fellow passengers after he was allegedly found creating obscene digitally altered images of a Muslim woman during a train journey in Maharashtra. The incident took place on Monday aboard the Pune–Kolhapur Special Express travelling from Miraj to Pune and came to light on Wednesday after a video of the confrontation surfaced on social media.
According to a fellow passenger, the man allegedly photographed a burqa-clad Muslim woman seated opposite him before using an image-editing application to create fake nude images.
“I was sitting on the upper berth and saw that he clicked a picture of a Muslim lady wearing a burqa. He then tried to remove her clothes using the application,” the passenger said in the video.
After noticing the act, the passenger immediately alerted the Railway Police before confronting the accused. He, along with a few other passengers, reportedly took the man’s phone and checked the application being used.
According to Siasat.com, the application displayed the prompt, “Remove this from the image,” but rejected the request, stating that it violated its content guidelines.
The man had allegedly photographed the woman without her knowledge while she was seated across from him. As fellow passengers confronted him, they also assaulted him while he attempted to explain his actions.
Railway Police reached the spot shortly after being alerted and took the man into custody. Officers also requested the person recording the incident not to upload the video on social media.
However, according to those present, the burqa-clad woman’s mother urged the person filming the incident to share the footage publicly so that people would become aware of such incidents.
The incident gained widespread attention after the video of the confrontation circulated on social media. Police have not yet issued a detailed statement on the case or disclosed the legal provisions under which the man has been booked. The matter remains under investigation.
