Jharkhand:  Md Emroz Lynched by Mob After Minor Girl Alleges Rape

Date:

A man was beaten to death by a mob in Jharkhand’s Chatra district after villagers alleged that the deceased had sexually assaulted a minor girl.  According to the officials, a minor girl who was missing returned home on Tuesday and told her family that she was contained at Emroz’s abode, who sexually assaulted her. As her statement took wind, hundreds of villagers gathered outside the abode of Emroz and allegedly attacked him.

According to the family, on the morning of 4 August 2026, between 8 and 9 AM, a crowd of approximately 100–150 people from the Hindu community came to the house. They accused the family of keeping a girl in the house. When the family denied it, the crowd started assaulting them, the FoEJ Media has learned.

The mob tied up Emroz’s mother, Sharmila Khatun, and beat her. They also accused the family of being police informers/agents, the FIR accessed by FoEJ Media reads.

The FIR further reads that hearing the ruckus, the deceased came towards his father. Members of the crowd caught him and beat him mercilessly with sticks (lathis) and rods.

Some constables of Tandwa Police Station were present at the spot during the assault, the FIR states.

Emroz was critically injured and later succumbed to his injuries.

The officials said the investigation on allegations made by the minor girl is still underway and have not been confirmed yet.

Police said they are conducting parallel investigations into the allegations made by the minor and the mob lynching incident, treating both as separate cases.

Meanwhile, the Block Development Officer Deolal Oraon said that the girl has been sent for medical examination and the reports are yet to come.

“The girl has been sent for medical examination, and the administration is awaiting the report before drawing any conclusions regarding the allegations,” Oraon said.

Legal proceedings under relevant provisions of the POCSO Act have also been initiated by the police alongside other applicable laws based on the girl’s statement.

Heavy police deployment has been made in the village to prevent any further escalation of tensions and maintain law and order.

Appealing for restraint, officials urged residents not to take the law into their own hands. They said the allegations against the deceased would be examined through the ongoing investigation, including medical and forensic examinations, and that any conclusions would be based on evidence. At the same time, they stressed that those found responsible for the mob violence would be identified through the investigation and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
