The Awami Itihaad Party (AIP) has raised serious concern over allegations made by jailed Baramulla MP Engineer Rashid regarding the treatment of Kashmiri prisoners in Delhi’s Tihar Jail.
According to Rashid’s counsel, Advocate Javeed Hubbi, the MP revealed during a recent legal meeting that Kashmiri inmates were being harassed through what he described as “deliberate methods” by jail authorities. Rashid alleged that male eunuch prisoners, declared HIV positive, were being placed in their barracks and encouraged to provoke and assault them.
Hubbi said Rashid narrowly escaped a serious injury when a group of such inmates allegedly pushed a gate onto him. “It was a miraculous escape. Had the gate struck him directly, it could have been fatal,” Hubbi claimed.
Rashid further alleged that other Kashmiri detainees including Ayoub Pathan of Beerwah, Bilal Mir of Qamarwari, Amir Gojri of Srinagar, and Arshid Tanch of Kupwara had also faced attacks and humiliation. He claimed the harassment escalated particularly during prayers, when inmates were deliberately disturbed.
The MP also suggested that certain gangsters inside Tihar were backing this campaign, which he said had intensified over the past three months.
Expressing anguish, AIP has demanded an impartial investigation, accountability of jail officials, and immediate steps to safeguard the rights and dignity of Kashmiri.
Tihar Jail Authorities Using New Tactics to Harass Kashmiri Prisinoers: Engineer Rashid
Incarcerated Baramulla MP Engineer Rashid has accused Tihar Jail authorities of subjecting Kashmiri prisoners to systematic harassment and psychological abuse.
According to Rashid and his counsel, one method allegedly involves placing HIV-positive transgender inmates with Kashmiri detainees and encouraging confrontations. He claimed that harassment intensifies during prayers, with deliberate provocations and threats aimed at disrupting worship.
Rashid’s party and legal team say these practices reflect a hostile environment designed to intimidate and destabilise Kashmiri inmates. The allegations have errupted protests and renewed calls for an independent inquiry and urgent safeguards for the detainees.
