Days after the death of student leader Osman Hadi, another political leader was shot in Bangladesh on Monday, raising fresh concerns over targeted violence.
Police said the injured leader, identified as Motaleb Sikder, is out of danger. The bullet reportedly grazed his ear, entering from one side and exiting through the other without causing life-threatening injuries.
Sikder holds senior positions in the National Citizen Party (NCP), serving as its Khulna divisional chief and as a central organiser of its labour wing, NCP Sramik Shakti. The party confirmed the incident in a statement shared on Facebook by its joint principal coordinator, Mahmuda Mitu.
The National Citizen Party was formed earlier this year in the aftermath of the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Launched on February 28, the party emerged from the Students Against Discrimination movement and the Jatiya Nagorik Committee, and has described itself as Bangladesh’s first student-led political party.
The latest shooting comes shortly after the death of Osman Hadi, a prominent figure in the 2024 student uprising. Hadi died on Thursday from gunshot wounds sustained in an attack in Dhaka on December 12. He was airlifted to Singapore on December 15 and admitted to the neurosurgical intensive care unit at Singapore General Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries days later.
“Despite the best efforts of the doctors from SGH and the National Neuroscience Institute, Mr Hadi succumbed to his injuries on 18 December 2025,” Singapore ministry of foreign affairs said in an official statement.
