A prayer meeting in Kalindi Basti, under the Sitaramdera police station limits of Jamshedpur, sparked tension on Sunday after BJP leader Gunjan Yadav, accompanied by Hindu nationalist supporters, confronted a Christian family over alleged religious conversion activities.
According to reports, a group of local residents alerted Yadav former district president of the BJP’s Jamshedpur Mahanagar unit about a suspected conversion program taking place in a rented house. Upon arrival, Yadav and his supporters disrupted the gathering, accused the attendees of forced conversions, and staged a protest, raising slogans at the site.
Police were called to the location to prevent the situation from escalating further. Sitaramdera Police Station in-charge Niranjan Kumar, along with a police team and additional forces, reached the scene and managed to pacify the crowd. Twelve individuals involved in the prayer gathering were detained for questioning. Authorities also seized several Bibles and other religious materials, which were sealed as part of the investigation.
Local residents claimed such gatherings had been taking place regularly every Sunday evening at the same house and alleged that they often continued late into the night. They also said they had previously raised concerns with local representatives.
The protest saw the presence of several local leaders including Amit Agrawal, Vikas Bauri, Shishir Kalindi, Dilip Paswan, and Umesh Saw. To maintain peace and prevent further disturbances, a Quick Response Team (QRT) was deployed in the area, and heavy police presence was maintained.
The incident has heightened communal sensitivity in the locality and raised concerns over religious freedom and public order enforcement. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the events and the legality of the gathering.
