India’s star wrestler Vinesh Phogat is on the verge of disqualification from the Paris Olympic Games. Originally competing in the 53kg category, Vinesh had dropped to the 50kg freestyle wrestling category for the Olympics. However, during the second day of weigh-ins, she exceeded the weight limit, which could result in her being barred from the competition.
According to the reports, Vinesh tried to do all she could to fall under the desired weight category. She did not sleep the entire night, skipped meals and did other possible things to fall under the weight category. Meanwhile, the Indian officials asked the Olympic committee for more time but nothing happened, all the efforts went in vain.
Vinesh reportedly tried to do all she could to come under the desired weight, be it skipping meals, or running. She didn’t sleep the entire night, hoping to fall under the weight category. The Indian officials also asked the Olympic committee for more time but the efforts went in vain.
Earlier, Vinesh Phogat made history as the first Indian woman to reach the final of an Olympic wrestling event. However, her journey took a dramatic turn when she was disqualified for being just 100 grams over the weight limit. Despite the narrow margin, the rules are strict, leaving no room for exceptions.
“She was found overweight by 100 grams this morning. The rules do not allow this, and she has been disqualified,” confirmed an Indian coach.
Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification means she will leave the Paris Games without a medal, despite being assured of a silver. Instead of standing on the podium, Vinesh will return home empty-handed.
Her first bout was the toughest, facing Japanese wrestler Yui Susaki, an undefeated four-time world and Olympic champion. Despite the odds, Vinesh executed a flawless game plan, drawing strength from her off-field struggles, and stunned Susaki in one of the biggest upsets in Olympic history.
The commission’s report also includes five other cases: the addition of Kevat-Tagwali, Kevat-Tagwale, Tagwale, Tagwali, and Tagwala to the Nomadic Tribes (B) category; the inclusion of Chunewala and Chunewale alongside the Chunari caste in the OBC list; the Hadgar caste being categorized under Special Backward Classes; Lad Vanjari becoming a sub-caste of Vanjari in Nomadic Tribes (D); and the removal of a duplicate mention of the Bhoyar caste in the OBC list.
This decision follows accusations from the ruling BJP during the Lok Sabha election campaign, claiming that the Congress was planning to include Muslims in the OBC list. Vinesh Phogat continued her remarkable run by defeating Ukraine’s Oksana Livach to secure a spot in the semi-finals of the women’s 50kg freestyle event. Overcome with emotion, tears of joy streamed down her cheeks, though her journey was far from over.
