Tensions flared in Dhani Mahu village of Haryana’s Bhiwani district on Sunday after two homes belonging to a Muslim family were set on fire, allegedly in retaliation for a Muslim youth eloping with a Hindu girl from Rajasthan.
According to eyewitness accounts and viral social media posts, a mob set the houses ablaze after reportedly removing all belongings, which were then torched outside the homes. A video circulating online shows the aftermath, charred property, smoke rising from the remains, and household items strewn across the ground.
The incident, widely shared online and linked by users to alleged “love jihad,” unfolded amid rising communal unease. The Hindu girl is reportedly from a village in the Hamirwas police station area of Rajasthan, and her elopement with the Muslim youth is said to have triggered the violence.
In response, a local panchayat was reportedly convened. Eyewitnesses told media outlets that masked men, armed with hammers, carried out the arson. Items destroyed in the blaze included a motorcycle, scooty, TV, washing machine, and other household goods. Fortunately, no family members were present at the time of the attack.
Several fire tenders were deployed to control the flames, and a heavy police presence has since been established in the area to prevent further unrest. Senior police officials, including DSP Dalip Singh, and Tosham police station in-charge Mahavir Singh, visited the scene. Authorities have stated that efforts are underway to identify those responsible for the violence.
As of Monday, it remains unclear whether the affected families have filed an official police complaint. No formal statement has yet been issued by district authorities regarding the incident.
