Bakery Torched by Mob after False Claim of Muslim Ownership

Date:

In a disturbing incident underscoring the growing communal divide in Maharashtra, a bakery owned by a Hindu man was set ablaze by a mob in Pune district’s Yavat village, after being mistakenly identified as Muslim-owned. The attack, rooted in Islamophobic sentiment and misinformation, left the livelihood of 28-year-old Swapnil Adinath Kadam in ruins.

The violence erupted following heightened tensions in the area, triggered by a controversial social media post reportedly made by a Muslim youth and allegations of vandalism of a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. A protest rally escalated into mob violence as the crowd marched toward a local mosque. On the way, a bystander allegedly pointed out Kadam’s bakery, claiming it belonged to a Muslim due to the presence of Muslim workers from Uttar Pradesh. Without verification, the mob turned on the shop.

Witnesses reported that stones were hurled, the bakery’s tin roof was ripped off, and flammable substances were thrown into the structure, setting it ablaze. The establishment was completely gutted in the attack. Kadam emphasized that neither he nor his employees had any connection to the viral post that had ignited tensions.

The case has sparked concern over the widening scope of communal violence in the state. While Islamophobia has traditionally targeted Muslims directly, this incident highlights a troubling trend where even those perceived to be Muslim or associated with Muslims face violent repercussions.

Police have launched an investigation, and local authorities have appealed for calm. Meanwhile, Kadam’s family is seeking justice and protection, expressing fear over the broader implications of such unchecked hostility.

Communal tensions in Maharashtra have a long and troubled history, but this episode serves as a stark reminder of the escalating dangers of misinformation and religious prejudice. It underscores an urgent need for community introspection and stronger safeguards against mob violence.

This incident not only exposes the vulnerability of Muslims in India but also demonstrates how prejudice can unjustly impact anyone associated with them, regardless of their own identity. As intolerance spreads, the social fabric itself stands at risk.
