Congress leader Rahul Gandhi vows to conduct a caste census if his party comes to power at the Centre, saying that it will be a historic and revolutionary decision that will change the country forever.
He also accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of betraying the Other Backward Classes (OBCs), Dalits and tribals by not taking a clear stand on the issue.
Addressing a rally in Bemetara district of Chhattisgarh on Wednesday, the last day of campaigning for the second phase of assembly elections, Gandhi said that Modi was elected on the promise of working for the OBCs, but now he says that there is no OBC and the poor are the only caste in India.
Modi flies in an aircraft worth Rs 12,000 crore and wears new clothes every day, while ignoring the plight of the farmers, labourers and small shopkeepers, he adds.
According to Congress President, his party will find out the actual population and strength of the OBCs, Dalits and tribals, who run the economy of the country.
He also highlighted his party’s achievements in various states, where it relieved the farmers of their loans and criticized the BJP-led Union government for favouring big industrialists like Adani with loan waivers.
Congress government will deposit the same amount of money in the bank accounts of the poor and the middle class that the BJP gives to the billionaires and big contractors, he asserted.
He further asserted that this money will stimulate the rural economy, as the poor and the middle class will spend it locally, unlike the billionaires who spend it abroad.
He also lauded the achievements of the Congress government in Chhattisgarh, headed by Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, and appealed to the people to vote for the party in the second phase of elections on November 17 for 70 assembly seats.
