Gaza, Oct 26: The wife, son, and daughter of Wael Al-Dahdouh, the bureau chief of Al Jazeera Arabic in Gaza, were among the victims of an Israeli raid that targeted two houses in the Nuseirat refugee camp on Tuesday morning, according to Palestinian security and medical sources.
The sources said that several other people were also killed in the attack, which came amid the escalating conflict between Israel and Hamas, the Islamist movement that controls the Gaza Strip.
The Al-Dahdouh family had moved to the southern part of the besieged enclave after Israel issued an evacuation order for some 1 million people to leave their homes in the northern and eastern areas of Gaza on October 13.
The Hamas-run Ministry of Interior in Gaza said in a statement that “the Al-Dahdouh family was targeted despite being forced to relocate to the southern part of the Gaza Strip in search of safety”.
Al Jazeera English news channel aired footage of Al-Dahdouh arriving at a hospital to see the bodies of his slain family members. The Al Jazeera Media Network also issued a statement on social platform X, confirming the death of Al-Dahdouh’s family members and expressing condolence.
“The Al Jazeera Media Network extends its sincere condolences and sympathy to our colleague Wael Al-Dahdouh on the loss of his family in an Israeli airstrike,” the statement said.
“Al Jazeera is deeply concerned about the safety and well-being of our colleagues in Gaza and hold the Israeli authorities responsible for their security,” it added.
The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate said that 24 journalists have been killed, some with their families, and dozens more have been wounded since Israel launched its airstrikes on the Gaza Strip.
The airstrikes were in response to a surprise attack by Hamas, which fired thousands of rockets at Israel on October 7, 2023. The ongoing retaliatory attacks by Israel- has claimed the lives of more than 6,500 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, according to health ministry of Gaza.
